Evan Pugh papers, 1778-1802

Document, 15 June 1778, signed during the American Revolution, certifying to Pugh's loyalty to the Patriot cause by his subscription to "the oath of allegiance & fidelity, as directed by an Act of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina... to give assurance of... Allegiance to the same...."; document signed by Robert Lide. Pugh's will, 16 July 1802, Darlington District, S.C., listing as legatees his sons, James and Ezra and daughter, Elizabeth, leaving land in Darlington District, S.C., adjacent to the Pee Dee River, as well as other tracts of property including a house, and African American slaves identified by name, including Nero, March, May, Charlotte, "Peg and her children," and others. [filed in oversize] Two items re Pugh family cemetery plot near Cashaway Baptist Church, with transcriptions of epitaphs and sketched map identifying location of cemetery (recorded 2 Sept. 1974)
